About Check Your Therapist
Created by Dr. Jack Stroud, Clinical Psychologist
Why I Built This Tool
As a Clinical Psychologist, I've witnessed firsthand how confusing and time-consuming it can be for people to verify their therapist's registration. The UK has four main therapy bodies - HCPC, BACP, BABCP, and UKCP - each with their own website and search system.
I created Check Your Therapist because I was frustrated by how difficult it was for my patients, colleagues, and the general public to easily check these multiple registers. People would often ask me how to verify if someone was properly registered, and I found myself explaining the same complex process repeatedly.
The Problem
Before this tool existed, checking a therapist's registration meant:
- Visiting four separate websites
- Understanding which register was relevant for different types of therapy
- Navigating different search interfaces and requirements
- Potentially missing important registrations if you didn't know where to look
This process was particularly challenging for vulnerable individuals seeking therapy, who shouldn't have to become experts in professional regulation just to find safe, qualified care.
The Solution
Check Your Therapist simplifies this entire process into a single search. Enter a therapist's name, select their profession (or search all registers), and get comprehensive results from all relevant therapy bodies in one place.
The tool is completely free to use and always will be. Professional registration information should be easily accessible to everyone, and I believe removing barriers to this information helps protect the public and supports ethical practice in our field.
My Background
I'm a Clinical Psychologist registered with the HCPC, with experience working across various settings in the UK. Having navigated the complexities of professional registration myself and helped many others understand these systems, I recognized the need for a more user-friendly approach.
This project combines my knowledge of UK therapy regulation with a commitment to making mental health resources more accessible to everyone.

Important: While I've made every effort to ensure this tool is accurate and helpful, always verify registration directly with the relevant professional body if you have concerns about a practitioner. This tool is for informational purposes and should not replace your own due diligence.
